The Science Behind LFE

Mobirise

Growth Mindset

The concept was introduced in 2006 by Carol Dweck, Professer of Psychology at Stanford University in her book "Mindset".

Individuals demonstrating a “Growth Mindset” have a greater resilience to setbacks and are able to find the mental resources to learn and to change their behaviour.

Research in neuroscience shows the plasticity of our brains and that neural growth occurs in response to our actions - at any age.

Based on these two principles, Learning From Emotions encourages individuals to be conscious of their emotions, ask pertinent questions of themselves and then formulate appropriate strategies for change.

Wheel of Emotions

Robert Plutchik (1927-2006) was a Professor of Psychology whose research included the study of emotions and the process of psychotherapy.

He designed a model of emotions: "The wheel of emotions". This wheel is composed of 8 basic opposing emotions (joy - sadness, confidence - disgust, fear - anger, surprise - anticipation). By combining these basic emotions, new emotions can be defined (e.g. Fear and Surprise = Worry, Fear and Sadness = Despair, Fear and Disgust = Shame).

Learning From Emotions is inspired by this model. When recording an emotion, opposite choices are presented, just choose the appropriate one and define its intensity.

Emotional Intelligence

This concept was proposed in 1990 by psychologists Peter Salovey and John Mayer. But it was Daniel Goleman who popularised the concept in his 1995 book “Emotional Intelligence”.

Emotional Intelligence is defined as “the ability to control your own emotions and those of others, to distinguish different emotions and to label them in an appropriate manner, and to utilise this emotional information to guide thoughts and actions.”

Learning From Emotions is a tool to increase emotional consciousness - the essential first step for improving Emotional Intelligence.

Implementation Intention

This concept was introduced in 1999 by Peter Gollwitzer, Professor of Psychology at NYU.

It’s a strategy based on the plan: If ...then…

Numerous studies demonstrate the efficiency of this approach for objectives that are difficult to attain; infact it has a success rate triple that of a control group.

Learning From Emotions uses Implementation Intention to establish alternative behaviour and to evaluate progress.

Benefit of Gratitude

This concept was introduced in 1999 by Peter Gollwitzer, Professor of Psychology at NYU.

It’s a strategy based on the plan: If ...then…

Numerous studies demonstrate the efficiency of this approach for objectives that are difficult to attain; infact it has a success rate triple that of a control group.

Learning From Emotions permet d'enregistrer la gratitude dès que l'on en a conscience (via saisir une émotion). Ce qui permet de renforcer encore l'impact de ce moment heureux.

Emotional First Aid

Dr. Guy Winch's first TED speech, entitled "Why We All Need to Practice Emotional First Aid," has been seen over 5 million times and is considered the fifth most inspiring speech of all time on TED.com.

Guy Winch believes that we should all have a first aid kit for our emotional "sores" just as we have one for our physical "sores". In 2014, he published the book "Emotional First Aid" where he deals with the most common mental ailments.

Learning From Emotions allows us to set up strategies to relieve our common suffering and to evaluate their effectiveness.

Regulation of Emotions and Benefits Proven by Research

Studies of different populations (adolescents, young adults, men, women) indicate that self-esteem is strongly and positively correlated with Emotional Intelligence.

Scientific enquiries conducted in several countries and in different organisations, indicate that Emotional Intelligence has an especially positive impact on the level of performance of Managers and Team Members.
The neuroeconomist Paul Zak has identified the role of oxytocin (a hormone synthesised in the hypothalamus) in the mediation of trust between strangers. Oxytocin also plays a major role in decision-making and the facilitation of exchanges.

Researchers have shown that Emotional Intelligence has a significant impact on both our mental and physical health. It has been observed that a sickness often occurs 6 months after a poorly managed emotional conflict (with the first symptoms appearing within 3 months).
