The most important task of our brain is not to think, feel or even see, but to keep our body alive and healthy so that we can survive and thrive.
How is our brain able to do this? By constantly making predictions. Its predictions eventually become the expressions we perceive in others and the emotions we feel.
People who make predictions, and construct emotions finely tuned to each situation, have a high "emotional granularity". They are able to accurately distinguish their emotions and have an expanded emotional vocabulary.
In many studies, people who can finely distinguish between unpleasant emotions are 30% more flexible in regulating their emotions, less likely to drink excessively under stress, and less likely to retaliate aggressively against someone who had hurt them.
Developing your "emotional granularity," finding the right words for the emotions you are experiencing is a critical step in helping you develop your emotional skills.
Don't be too demanding with yourself, to find the right word is difficult, especially if your work on emotions is still recent.
To help you, we propose below a first list of emotional words, grouped by themes.
You will complete this list as your discoveries, your awareness and your progress
